Introduction :
The state of Gujarat is blessed with ample Inland water resources amenable for the development of fisheries. Among the fresh water resources there are five major perennial rivers (3865 km), reservoirs and lakes (3.48 lakh ha), Village ponds and Irrigation tanks (0.71 lakh ha). Estuarine area (0.21 lakh ha) and brackish water area (3.76 lakh ha) provides immense potential for the development of fisheries in the state. So far 10,200 ha areas have been brought under aquaculture. Annual fish production from these resources obtained is in the tune of 50 to 70 thousand M. Ton per year, of which about 88% of fish production is contributed by the natural resources like lakes, rivers and estuarine area and reservoirs, by capturing fish, while the share of aqua cultural production is only 12% with an average annual productivity of about 900 kg per hectare. The main reason for such poor productivity is non-existence of any research facility in the State for inland aquaculture development. In order to conduct research in the field of inland fish farming and development of technology suitable to the local agro-climatic conditions, College of Fisheries, Junagadh Agricultural University, Veraval made a project proposal of “Establishment of Inland Fisheries Research Centre at Junagadh" to the State Government in 10th five year plan which was approved without any staff setup.
Total area of farm is about 5.0 ha. There are y stocking ponds (100x30x1.5M). For water supply 5 bore wells have been made.
