After initiation of the college, it was a need to separate the various departments for the justification of teaching and research activities. Hence, the Department of Natural Resource Management was started with multi-functional activities like Teaching, Research and Extension in Agronomy, Soil Science & Agril. Chemistry, Agril. Meteorology and Agril. Engineering. The department is working for teaching and research in NRM disciplines of horticulture for the students and farmers with following objectives.
OBJECTIVES
1. To impart under graduate education in NRM disciplines.
2. To initiate research on advanced concepts of NRM.
3. To establish instructional farm, organic farm and museum for UG & PG students.
4. To establish soil science laboratory and agrometeorological observatory.

4.3  Research Achievements
1)    Recommendations for farmers during 2016-17 to 20120-21
2016-17
1.   Integrated weed management in organically grown groundnut
The farmers of South Saurashtra Agro-climatic Zone growing kharif groundnut under organic farming are advised to adopt stale seedbed technique (pre-sowing irrigation + killing of weed flush by harrowing) and keep weed free condition throughout the crop growth period or carry out hand weeding and interculturing at 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing for effective control of weeds and securing higher net realization.
2.   Effect of multi-micronutrient formulations on tomato
The farmers of South Saurashtra Agro-climatic Zone growing tomato in medium black calcareous soil are recommended to apply micronutrients as per soil test value as basal in addition to recommended dose of fertilizers (75-37.5-62.5 N-P2O5-K2O kg/ha) to tomato for getting higher yield and net return. OR Foliar spraying of multi-micronutrient formulation Grade-IV (Fe-Mn-Zn-Cu-B, 4.0-1.0-6.0-0.5-0.5%) @ 1% at 45, 60 and 75 DAS in addition to recommended dose of fertilizers (75-37.5-62.5 N-P2O5-K2O kg/ha) to tomato is recommended for getting higher yield and net return.
3.  Effect of multi-micronutrient formulations on garlic

21.  SWOT
(A)       Strengths
  • Research based teaching in all courses by experienced teachers.
  • Course structure and syllabus is contemporary and there are mechanisms to make it effective as per Vth Deans' Committee of ICAR.
  • Courses are broad spectrum and helps in the all-round development of the student, which progressively becomes increasingly specialized.
  • Enjoys an ideal-teacher ratio, which favours individual attention and coaching.
  • The departments have plan and other agency schemes with abundant funds for research and development.
  • Classrooms, practical classrooms, laboratories and conference/seminar halls are adequate, spacious with good ambience.
  • Good support from ICAR through providing development grant for education and research.
  • Enthusiastic and devotee supporting staff.
  • Ample opportunities and academic freedom for inter-disciplinary research.
(B)       Weaknesses
  • Faculty should be encouraged to upgrade the teaching and research skills through deputation at national and international institutes.
  • Content of courses need to be reviewed by experts in academics and industry and alumni of a recent vintage for greater course effectiveness.
  • Frontline areas like organic farming, precision farming, remote sensing and geographical information system, system modelling, etc. needs to be developed.
  • Schemes/projects should be strengthened with adequate staffing and vacant positions need to be filled up.
  • Creation of new additional infrastructure facilities and maintenance is constrained by scarce financial resources.
  • Funds for replacement of vehicles, farm implements, etc. need to be granted by ICAR/State Government.
  • Research farms need 24 hour electric power supply.
  • Maintenance/Renovation of office/farm/laboratory buildings/roads/structures needs to be financed.
  • Specialized software and ERP needs to be developed/acquired.
  • Grievance handling procedure needs to be restructured.
  • Lengthy administrative, accounting and academic procedures need to be reformed.
(C)       Opportunities
  • Vast opportunities in horticultural education and research.
  • Good scope for recycling of crop residues, organic farming, precision farming, integrated farming system research, protected cultivation, wasteland development, etc.
  • Recycling of industrial effluent contaminated water.
  • Best opportunities in planting material, seed production, preparation of vermicompost, biofertilizers, micronutrients, organic inputs etc.
  • Monitoring and mitigation of climate change.
  • Scope for developing disaster management technology.
(D)       Threats
  • Increasing competition with private companies.
  • Competition with private education institutes in near future.
  • Continuous conversion of agricultural lands to other purposes.
  • Decreasing per capita land holding.
  • Deterioration of soil health and emerging environmental pollution problems.
  • Global warming.
