DEPARTMENT OF POST HARVEST TECHNOLOGY
After initiation of college of horticulture at Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh, it was a need to separate the various departments for the justification of teaching and research activities. Hence, the Department of Post-Harvest Technology was started with multi-functional activities like Teaching, Research and Extension in horticultural crops. The department is working for teaching and research in horticultural crops. Disciplines for the students and farmers with following objectives.
OBJECTIVES
1. To provide under graduate education in post-harvest technology discipline.
2. To introduce post graduate programme for post-harvest technology in future.
3. To strengthen the research work for under graduate students for practical teaching works.
4. To initiate the research in advanced concepts and post-harvest management on various horticultural crops.
5. To establish the post-harvest technology laboratory for UG & PG students.
6. To demonstrate various value added products from fruits and vegetables to students and farmers.

2.  RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Department have full-fledged established post-harvest technology.  Departmental as well as PG students, research work on different objectives is carried out at post-harvest technology lab of this department.
2.1 Major crops for various research areas
Major crops: Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Crops.
Research areas:
  • To develop technology for post-harvest management of horticultural crops.
  • To develop technology for preservation of different value added products from horticultural crops 
  • To develop technology for minimizing post-harvest loss of horticultural crops.

Mango traders are advised to treat the freshly harvested mango fruit by dipping in Putrescine Dihydrochloride @ 175 mg/lit for 5 minute for increasing shelf life and quality up to 12 days storage at room temperature.

Black Jamun
1
Farmers/ Food processors are advised to heat the Jamun juice at 67⁰C temperature for 13 minutes and add 0.03% (w/w) sodium benzoate at little warm state to preserve its nutrients. The Jamun juice, thus, prepared packed in 1 litre PET bottle, can safely be stored up to 30 days in the refrigerator (7 + 2⁰C).
