DEPARTMENT OF PLANT PROTECTION
After establishment of College of Horticulture, it was a necessary to separate the horticulture department in various division for strengthening of teaching and research activities. Hence, the Department of Plant Protection was formed with prime objective to perform multi-functional activities like Teaching, Research and Extension in Entomology, Pathology and Nematology. The department is functioning with the following objectives.
OBJECTIVES
1.      To provide under graduate education in plant protection.
2.      To strengthen the research laboratory for under graduate students for practical works.
3.      To initiate the research in advanced concepts and crop protection of various horticultural crop pests.

Department has well-maintained infrastructural facilities including U.G. teaching- research laboratory, practical class room with projector, well- preserved and maintained insect and disease specimens related to horticultural crops for farmers, extension workers, visitors & students.

Effectiveness of B. bassiana in combination with different insecticides against onion thrips
     For effective and economical management of thrips,Thrips tabaciin onion,the farmers of South Saurashtra Agro-climatic zone are advised to apply three sprays of dimethoate 30 EC 0.03% (10 ml/10 litre of water) or B. bassiana 1.15 WP 0.0035% (Min. 2 x 106 cfu/g) + dimethoate 30 EC 0.015% (30 gm + 5.0 ml/10 litre of water) or B. bassiana 1.15 WP 0.007% (60 gm/10 litre of water) first spray at initiation of pest infestation and subsequent two sprays at ten days interval after first spray.
For organic farming in onion are advised to apply three sprays ofB. bassiana 1.15 WP 0.007% (60 gm/10 litre of water) first spray at initiation of pest infestation and subsequent two sprays at ten days interval after first spray are found effective and economical management of thrips,Thrips tabaci.
(Dimethoate 30 EC is registered under CIB approved list and no waiting period required from last spray of this insecticide to harvesting)

Subsequent second0.007% (60 gm/10 litre of water) and third0.009% (80 gm/10 litre of water) spray at ten days interval after first spray.

Study on efficacy of different insecticides against white fly in papaya
     Two sprays of acetamiprid 20 SP 0.006% (3 g/10 l of water) or thiamethoxam 25 WG 0.01% (4g/10 l of water), first at nymphs and adults infestation and second at 15 days after first spray found effective against whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) infesting papaya.
